Speaking of Security… GITMO Advice

Friday, February 12th, 2010

While the administration continues to search for solutions to its self-imposed problem of what to do with the GITMO detainees, one influential senator offered the White House some advice. Here’s what he said:

“My advice to the president is, with a great deal of respect, take New York Off your radar screen. Find another location. The most logical place is in some isolated military base that is completely far away from population centers and is self-contained.”

That sounds like GITMO to me, and the senator was none other than New York liberal Chuck Schumer. When a liberal like Schumer sees the light, conservatives are clearly winning the debate.

But here’s more evidence of the Left’s misplaced priorities. Remember the Department of Homeland Security report last year that suggested that conservatives, soldiers and pro-life activists were potential “domestic terrorists”? The administration took a lot of heat for that report and eventually retracted it.

But we’ve learned in recent days that it also acted on the report. The Associated Press broke a shocking story this week that the Obama Administration did in fact track pro-life activists in Wisconsin last year, conducting a threat assessment on several groups even though they clearly posed no threat to national security.

Unfortunately, this Administration is incredibly sensitive about making sure that admitted terrorists get their constitutional rights. But when it comes to American citizens, the administration tramples on the Constitution because its ideology tells it that the war against Islamic terrorism is just a misunderstanding and that conservatives pose the real threat.

Back to NYC?

Here’s another stunning example of President Obama’s refusal to reverse course after a mistake. You may recall that the administration announced it would transfer the accused 9/11 plotters, currently held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, from military custody to the civilian courts and hold their trial in New York City, site of the worst terrorist attack on U.S. soil. There was a tremendous backlash from the people and local politicians that had the administration back peddling fast. The notion of 9/11 terror trials near Ground Zero was seemingly put to rest.

But Couric broached the subject during her Super Bowl pre-game interview, and Obama said, “I have not ruled it out, but I think it’s important for us to take into account the practical, logistical issues involved. I mean, if you have a city that is saying no, and a police department that is saying no, and a mayor that is saying no, that makes it difficult.”

That’s just like his response to socialized medicine. Even with overwhelming liberal majorities, Congress can’t get it done. The American people said no in town hall protests last summer. They’ve said no in poll after and poll since then. And Massachusetts voters shouted “Don’t you dare!” and denied Obama his cherished Senate supermajority. But Obama hasn’t gotten the message. Far from the “audacity of hope,” that’s the audacity of arrogance.

By the way, while the president is still pursuing the idea of civilian trials for admitted terrorists, I’d like to observe again that three Navy SEALS accused of giving a high profile terrorist a fat lip are being tried in a military tribunal – the same tribunals that Obama and his allies say would be unfair for terrorists. In what bizarre world do jihadists get more constitutional rights than our brave soldiers?

Obama: “I’d rather be a really good one-term president than a mediocre two-term president.”

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

In an ABC interview last night, President Obama said something publicly that he has been saying behind the scenes in Washington for some time, and it explains a lot. Obama told Diane Sawyer, “I’d rather be a really good one-term president than a mediocre two-term president.” It’s an odd statement when you think about it. If you are a “really good” president, then you’re guaranteed to get a second term. Let me translate Obama’s statement for you.

The only way a president gets defeated is if he does a lot of things that the American people really don’t like. Things like wildly out-of-control spending, promoting abortion-on-demand, massive cap and trade energy taxes, granting foreign terrorists constitutional rights, socialized medicine, redefining marriage, and takeovers of major industries such as Government Motors.

In Obama’s mind, these are all really good things, and those who object are just too stupid to know what’s good for them. It’s this mentality that explains why Obama continues pushing for his socialized medicine scheme even after the stunning results in Massachusetts last week, and in spite of polls showing that nearly 60% of voters oppose it.

Are The Jihadists Ready To Strike Again?

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

The signs are unmistakable. Something big is brewing among the death worshippers of radical Islam. As we went into the weekend, U.S. intelligence officials warned that female suicide bombers trained in Yemen may be heading to the U.S.

Late Friday, the United Kingdom raised its terrorist threat level to “severe.” Same in India, where intelligence agencies picked up evidence that Pakistani-based jihadists may use gliders to attack Indian cities. ABC reported that in recent days an unusually large number of people on the U.S. “no-fly” list have been caught trying to board U.S. flights – evidence that our defenses are being probed.

Yesterday, Al-Jazeera TV released another Osama bin Laden audio tape taking credit for the botched Christmas Day bombing and promising that more attacks were on the way. At least one private terror monitoring firm claims that bin Laden used certain phrases in this latest tape that he had previously used as signals to launch pre-planned attacks.

Meanwhile, Christmas Day bomber Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab continues his silence on the advice of the lawyer provided to him by the Obama Administration, courtesy of your tax dollars. Many in the U.S. intelligence community are furious that they have been denied the chance to get vital information as a result of the White House extending constitutional rights to terrorists.
